100% Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Anthemis nobilis) — steam-distilled from flowering tops in France and the UK. High chamazulene content for potent anti-inflammatory, nervine, and skin-calming properties. The most gentle of our PM oils — soft enough for even sensitive skin. 5mL.

For the nights when nothing works.
Roman Chamomile is for when anxious exhaustion won't let you sleep. Its primary active compounds — chamazulene and bisabolol — are potent nervines and anti-inflammatories. Research confirms Chamomile significantly reduces anxiety scores in clinical settings. The same apigenin that makes chamomile tea effective at promoting calm binds to GABA receptors when inhaled or applied topically.
Rare, labour-intensive, and uncommonly gentle. One oil that works on the mind and the skin simultaneously.

Roman Chamomile
Anthemis nobilis
Chamazulene — Chamomile's signature blue compound — is formed during steam distillation from matricine. It is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories documented in aromatherapy research. Bisabolol, another key compound, has been confirmed in clinical studies to accelerate skin healing and reduce inflammation at the cellular level. Apigenin is a GABA-A receptor modulator that promotes calm without sedation.
Roman Chamomile requires significantly more plant material to produce than most oils — which is why 5mL is the standard size for this oil. The concentration is appropriate to its rarity.
Mind and skin. Both quieted.
Chamomile's nervine and anti-inflammatory action works on the nervous system and the skin through distinct but complementary mechanisms.
The anxious mind — gently quieted.
Apigenin and bisabolol work together as nervines — compounds that calm the nervous system without creating sedation. Clinical studies confirm Roman Chamomile significantly reduces anxiety scores. The effect is subtle and accumulative: not a switch, but a dimmer. The anxious loop slows, then stops.
Sensitive skin — visibly calmed.
Chamazulene's anti-inflammatory action reduces redness, reactive skin, and irritation at the cellular level. Bisabolol accelerates healing. Together they make Roman Chamomile the most effective aromatic oil for inflammatory skin conditions — eczema, rosacea, general sensitivity. Always dilute well before applying to skin.
Five ways to use it.
Gentle enough for sensitive skin, potent enough to quiet clinical anxiety.
Evening diffusion
Add 3–4 drops to your diffuser in the hour before sleep. Roman Chamomile is more concentrated than most oils — less is more. It creates a soft, apple-floral atmosphere that signals the nervous system to downshift.
Tension and anxiety blend
2 drops Chamomile + 3 drops Lavender + 1 drop Cedarwood in your diffuser. One of the most effective anxiety-relief blends in aromatherapy. Use during the transitional hour between work and rest.
Sensitive skin treatment
Dilute 1 drop in 10mL of Jojoba Oil for a very gentle face oil (0.5% dilution) for sensitive or reactive skin. Apply to clean, damp skin. Chamomile's chamazulene visibly reduces redness over consistent use.
Muscle tension relief
Dilute 2 drops in Jojoba Oil and massage into tense neck, shoulders, or lower back. Chamomile's anti-inflammatory and nervine effects work topically — it relaxes the muscle while calming the nervous system driving the tension.
In-between hours blend
For the 4–6pm window when anxiety peaks: 2 drops Chamomile + 2 drops Bergamot in your diffuser. Bergamot lifts; Chamomile steadies. The combination handles the specific exhausted-but-anxious state better than either alone.
A day of Chamomile.
The transition oil and the sleep oil — the two moments when anxiety needs addressing.
The anxious hour, handled.
Chamomile + Bergamot in your diffuser during the transition from work to evening. Bergamot lifts the tired; Chamomile steadies the anxious. A specific solution for a specific kind of difficult hour.
The one that lets you rest.
3–4 drops in the diffuser one hour before sleep. Apply one drop (diluted in Jojoba) to your wrists. This is the oil for the nights when anxiety won't let go — the gentlest tool for the hardest hour.
Q1 Why is Chamomile so much more expensive than other oils?
Roman Chamomile requires significantly more plant material per millilitre than most essential oils — the flowering tops must be harvested at peak bloom and the yield per kilo of plant matter is very low. This is why we sell it in 5mL rather than 15mL. The concentration is appropriate: a little goes a long way, and the quality makes the price reasonable over time.
Q2 What's the difference between Roman and German Chamomile?
Both are genuine Chamomile species with therapeutic value. Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) has a softer, sweeter scent and is primarily used for anxiety, nervine support, and sensitive skin. German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a stronger, earthier character with higher chamazulene content and is often preferred for deep inflammatory conditions. We carry Roman for its versatility and gentleness.
Q3 Can I use it if I have a ragweed allergy?
Use caution. Chamomile is in the Asteraceae (daisy) family — the same family as ragweed. People with ragweed allergies may react to Chamomile essential oil, though topical and aromatic reactions differ from ingestion. If you have a known ragweed allergy, patch test and start with low concentrations. Consult your healthcare provider if uncertain.
Q4 Is it safe during pregnancy?
Use caution during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. Chamomile has traditionally been used as a uterine tonic and some compounds may stimulate uterine contractions. Inhalation in small amounts is generally considered lower risk than topical use, but consult your midwife or healthcare provider before use during pregnancy.
Q5 How does it work for anxiety specifically?
Chamomile's apigenin is a GABA-A receptor partial agonist — meaning it interacts with the same receptors that anti-anxiety medications target, but more gently and without receptor down-regulation. Clinical trials using standardized chamomile extract have shown significant reductions in GAD-7 (generalized anxiety) scores. The aromatic compounds enter the bloodstream via the olfactory system and produce measurable physiological calming effects.
